Garabandal

The Village
San Sebastian de Garabandal is a quaint village that evokes a sense of a bygone era in Spain.
You can still see cattle moving through the village, and horses line the mountains nearby. There is a romantic and holy atmosphere in this sweet village, full of the love of Our Blessed Virgin and her Son. Many visitors and pilgrims are drawn to Garabandal because of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary that began in the 1960s. The village offers a sense of peace and spiritual reflection, with its serene landscapes and sacred atmosphere. This makes it a cherished destination for those seeking solace and a deeper connection with their faith. The apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Garabandal have brought messages of prayer, repentance, and conversion. Many believe that these divine encounters have blessed the village with a special spiritual significance. As a result, Garabandal continues to be a place where the faithful gather to honor the Virgin Mary and seek her guidance.
First Visit: An Angel
Four girls, Conchita González, Jacinta González, Mari Loli Mazón, and Mari Cruz González, all of whom were 12 years old, heard a sound like thunder while playing near the village on June 18th, 1961. In fear, they raised their heads to see what was making the noise.
An angel appeared before them suddenly, shining with beauty and brilliance. It only took a few moments for him to disappear without a word being spoken.
In the following days, the Angel continued to visit them, looking at them in silence and smiling. As they waited for the Angel to appear, the people of Garabandal met in the evening to pray the rosary with the girls.
Finally, on July 1st, 1961, the Angel spoke to the girls and asked, "Do you know why I'm here?" I have come to proclaim that the Blessed Virgin Mary will appear to you tomorrow as Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” The girls, filled with joy, cried out simultaneously, “Tell her to come soon!”

Our Lady's Appearance
Around 6 pm on July 2nd, the feast day of the Visitation, the Blessed Virgin appeared to the girls with the Child Jesus and two angels as they walked in the calleja (a stone pathway). The girls recognized one of them as the Angel who had appeared to them previously. He was later identified as Saint Michael the Archangel. A nearly identical copy was found on the other side.
There was an eye above the Blessed Virgin, to the right, which the girls called the eye of God. It was without fear that the girls began speaking with the Blessed Virgin. As they talked about their families and the work they did in the fields or in their houses, the Blessed Virgin Mary smiled at them. In Conchita's words, it was like her own mother had just returned from a long trip. In the Blessed Virgin's presence, they prayed the rosary well, having been taught to do so by her.
In response to the Blessed Virgin's announcement that she had to leave, the little girls begged her to stay. They were consoled by her promise to return the next day.
